Food Trip: Paul Boulangerie and Patisserie


I’ve long been a fan of anything and everything French (except baguettes, I must say), and have been wanting to try Paul’s after seeing photos of sinful looking desserts on my Instagram feed. Paul’s is an old French bakery (since 1889!) which means that a) they must know what they’re doing to last that long and b) you can’t get any more authentic French cuisine than this (at least in Manila) so imagine my excitement when the hubby finally relented and took me there last weekend.
We got there past 8PM, the crowd was a little more manageable and we got seated within ten minutes. The hubby got his Croque Monsieur, and while I would normally have gotten the Croque Madame, I opted to try their Paill Saumon.
The Paill Saumon, or smoked salmon served on a bed of potatoes (hash browns?), was served with a small serving of salad. I’m not a salad person (but my weakness is the heavenly salad at Sonya’s Garden) but I did like that the leafy thingies were fresh – they didn’t taste like leaves at all which is what I hate most in the usual salad served in restaurants. And the salmon used was also fresh and cleaned properly; I could tell because if not, I would have itched like crazy. And I was very delighted with how cheap it was at Php250.
I didn’t have much love for the potatoes though, as they were a bit burnt and dry.

Predictably, we ordered dessert as well. I’m a sucker for macarons and I was like a child on Christmas morning upon seeing the gigantic macarons on display so I got one of those and a tartelette chocolat.

But, turns out I was in for some major disappointment in the dessert department. The tart was bland and the chocolate was practically tasteless (I kept asking myself if I did get the chocolate one). I only had about two bites of it before declaring it a loss. 
As for the macarons – well, this was a big let-down. It was no good at all – it lacked taste, and did not melt in my mouth. It didn’t leave me wanting more. Or maybe I have high standards, considering that I’ve tasted THE Laduree, which is arguably the best in the world, but I would gladly pick Chez Karine’s or even Bizu’s macarons over this.  

Verdict? Too early to write this place off, but based on what I have tasted, I would say it’s all hype. The desserts are rather overpriced compared with the quality you get. I might go back though to give their fruit tarts and croissants a try.
